For any imports of food, drinks, and nutritional supplements entering the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires the submission of what’s called Prior Notice. The FDA will release a confirmation number in the form of a barcode following receipt of the Prior Notice, which would accompany the majority of food shipments.
Filing Prior Notice necessitates a current Food Facility Registration for the producer. Again, if shipments involve food, beverages, or supplements, it is a requirement and depending on the method of transport, Prior Notice must be submitted and received at different deadlines.
For example, if shipping by road, the FDA must receive the submission in two hours. Air and rail shipments are four hours while water shipments require Prior Notice of eight hours. If being shipped via international mail, then the FDA must receive Prior Notice before the food, beverage, or supplement is even shipped.
